Removal of disconnected ventricular catheter

Diagnosis: hydrocephalus
  • 2-years-old girl
  • Presented with symptoms of raised intracranial pressure
  • CT scan showed dilated ventricles. The ventricular catheter had been disconnected from the shunt system and had fallen inside the cavity of the right lateral ventricle
EQUIPMENT USED
  • StorzDecq endoscope with 30o optic lens
  • Grabbing forceps
SURGICAL TIPS
  • Find the part of the catheter which is in the ventricular cavity
  • Pull the catheter inwards to find the proximal end
  • Grab the catheter from the proximal end and pull it out by removing the endoscope while grabbing the catheter.
